EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Severn Trent is evolving its data platforms, and we’re looking for a Data Engineer to bring valuable experience to our team. In this key role, you will help build and expand our data infrastructure, playing an essential part in supporting our data-driven initiatives.
As a IT Data Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable data pipelines, enabling advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives. Working closely with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders, you’ll help ensure seamless data integration, optimised data flows, and high data quality to support the changing needs of the business.
Here at Severn Trent, we embrace innovation, and you will be looked upon to adopt best practices in data engineering and stay updated with emerging technologies.
Key Accountabilities in the role include:-
- Pipeline Design and Development: Create and manage data pipelines that collect, process, and store large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
- Data Lake Optimisation and Querying: Develop and optimise external tables within Azure Synapse’s SQL pool, leveraging parquet-based data storage in the data lake for efficient querying and seamless data access.
- Data Quality and Governance: Implement data quality checks and data management procedures while ensuring that data security and compliance obligations are met.
- Performance Optimization: Optimize data processing and storage solutions for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
- Documentation and Communication: Maintain comprehensive documentation of data processes and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity, and a caring attitude in equal weight.
We seek strong SQL skills and experience with SQL-based technologies, especially in data warehousing environments like Azure Synapse. Familiarity with a programming language such as Python, Java, or Scala will be important in this role.
Experience with Azure data services, including Azure Data Lake, Synapse Analytics, and Databricks is preferred, though experience in GCP or AWS is also welcome. You should feel comfortable translating complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, fostering effective collaboration across teams.
We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.
We do more because we care.
