We have a brilliant opportunity to join our Capital and Commercial Services as a Green Recovery Strategic Project Assistant Mechanical Engineer based in our design office in Derby.

 

You will play a key role supporting in the construction of two major strategic projects; a new water treatment works to enable Severn Trent to utilise a new abstraction license that they have procured for the River Trent and the expansion of Severn Trent’s second large Wastewater Treatment Works.

 

As an Assistant Mechanical Engineer, you will be fully supported in your professional development building on the knowledge obtained during your degree, applying sound engineering practice to ensure compliance of designs to specifications and industry standards.

You will be a keen problem solver, who can work flexibly to support the team.

Severn Trent runs a Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) which is accredited by the IMechE, you will be provided with a professionally registered engineer to mentor you through your journey to becoming a Chartered Engineer.

 

Your key accountabilities in helping us will be:

 

  • Undertaking technical calculations and assessments to support with mechanical design decisions.
  • Checking, reviewing and feeding back on mechanical design outputs from external consultants and suppliers.
  • Identifying and reviewing deviations from Severn Trent’s standards and support the Project Management Team in taking these deviations to the relevant standards owners or Standards Approval Board for approval.
  • Attend the different offices, operational and construction site locations associated with the Green Recovery Decarbonising Water Resources and Wanlip programmes to undertake inspections and co-ordination meetings with contractors and suppliers.
  • Ensuring Severn Trent’s design health and safety standards are adhered to, in particular standards relating to functional safety, hazards and operability (HazOp), HazComm, DSEAR and the CDM Regulations.
  • Reviewing access, lifting and maintenance strategies, ensuring safe operation of our plant and equipment.
  • Communicating lessons learned from the project to the wider business, driving innovation and develop new approaches and solutions.
  • Establishing a network of external stakeholders to capture learning, encourage innovation and understand best practice.
  • Evaluating mechanical design choices clearly identifying risks and the benefits to the whole life cost, safety and the environment.

We want someone with a Mechanical Engineering Degree accredited with the IMechE, a minimum of two years’ experience and a Full UK driving licence.
