Vehicle Technician (Mechanic, HGV)

Want to do the best work of your life? Playing your part in making a big difference to the environment and communities we serve. Our people make Severn Trent a truly exciting and inclusive place to work – a place where you can be yourself and let your skills shine.

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.

We're looking for a Vehicle Technician with HGV experience to join our busy servicing team, working Monday – Friday, based at our workshop in Staverton, Gloucestershire.

This is a great opportunity for a Technician looking for a varied role, where you'll use your mechanical knowledge to find faults, maintain service levels, and repair vehicles in the broad and varied Severn Trent Water Fleet of over 3,000 vehicles (this includes cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and mobile plant).

You can say goodbye to working shift patterns and weekends with a 37 hour week, Monday to Friday (typical hours between 7.30am – 5.30pm) and while there may be overtime required, this is optional and we will properly compensate you for your extra time!

Does this sound like you? Then read on...

Your key accountabilities in helping us on our journey will be:

Servicing and maintaining a diverse range of company vehicles and plant to a high standard, making sure STW and manufacturer guidelines are followed and attend to unscheduled maintenance and emergency work as required.

Preparing and presenting company vehicles for annual testing to required standards, while inputting all key job information daily into a fleet management system.

You’ll be customer focused, working productively to minimise vehicle downtime.

Not only will we give you more flexibility compared to other companies, we’ll also continuously help you develop your career by providing you with training courses and relevant qualifications to improve your skills and knowledge.

We believe it’s essential that we take bold steps to reduce our impact on the environment, so one of our Triple Pledge commitments is that by 2030 we will have 100% electric vehicles, availability of vehicles permitting.  Any new cars or small vans we buy from now on will be electric, and we expect suitable larger vans to become available in the next few years.   Based on today’s outlook, electric HGV and tanker options may not be available by 2030, so we are working with electric vehicle suppliers to try and speed up this process, and we are exploring other low-carbon options such as hydrogen and biogas.

Our other 2 commitments are to have net zero carbon emissions across the business and 100% of our power to come from renewable sources by 2030.   It’s an exciting time to join us on this journey as we reduce our carbon footprint to help combat climate change.

Still you? Wonderful.

You’ll have experience of Fleet Maintenance including HGV and commercial vehicles and have completed a recognised Apprenticeship with City & Guilds qualifications or NVQ equivalent (HGV).  Driving will be part of the role so a full driving licence is essential, it is preferred that this has a LGV C + E category (class 1 HGV).

Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.

We want people who show up and roll their sleeves up. Restless spirits who are ready to be part of something bigger, who care, who really care... because when you really care, you’ll go above and beyond. When you really care you don’t just talk about it, you do more.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.

And when it comes to inclusion, we’re making sure we keep up the progress with our wonderful working groups – LGBTQ+, Women in Operations & STEM, Disability and Ethnicity; who help us do just that.

We do more, because we care.

It’s not just a job you’ll get here, you’ll get a career too. We have a range of benefits that reward and recognise great work and award-winning training to ensure you reach your potential. And we’ll also help you play your part in looking after the environment and the community in which we live.  Here’s some of our favourites:

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays (and the ability to buy/ sell up to 5 days per year)
  • Annual bonus scheme (of up to £1500 per annum based on company performance)  subject to T&C’s
