Severn Trent's investment of £40 million in transforming the Strongford wastewater treatment plant, Barlaston in Stoke-On-Trent into a world first Net Zero Hub (NZH), including £10 million from the Ofwat Innovation Fund, marks a significant step towards their goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

 

This initiative not only demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability but also sets a benchmark in environmental best practice. The integration of advanced greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring and technological innovation at the NZH will influence the industry widely, promoting a shift towards more sustainable practice.

 

Our Waste Water Recycling team have a great opportunity for you to join as our new Mechanical Maintenance Technician located at the Net Zero Hub,  Strongford sewage treatment works.

 

The position offers an opportunity to be part of a forward-thinking team working on a variety of equipment, assets and new technology including the introduction of AI, where you will have the opportunity to embrace curiosity and develop new skills outside of your normal day to day activities.

 

You’ll be responsible for making sure our treatment processes are working optimally to deliver important work enhancing our regions rivers. The role will consist of…

 

  • Proactively and reactively maintain the mechanical assets onsite.
  • Pumps, Chemical dosing, Gear boxes, High pressure systems, Gas Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems, Valves, Motors, Generators, Drive Belts, Conveyors, Scrapers
  • Fabrication, Lubrication and welding activities. 
  • Continuously improve mechanical asset base.
  • Complete Lifting Operations safely as per LOLER regs.
  • Fault finding and diagnostics
  • Interpret and update Mechanical drawings
  • Supporting the Design and Build of new processes
  • Owns site mechanical performance for the site
  • Monitor treatment processes using SCADA system and act on alarms as required
  • Proactively review the health and availability of assets on site
  • Ensure all relevant training including mechanical and maintenance training is up to date
  • Providing cover and expertise within the outer sewage works and pumping stations of Stoke-On-Trent

 

 

You will be based at Strongford sewage treatment works in Barlaston, Stoke-On-Trent, and will be provided with a vehicle for business use, laptop, safety clothing and tools appropriate to the job.

 

The core working hours are Monday to Friday, you will also participate in a 24/7 stand-by rota.

 

The role is part of a competency framework to support your development from “Foundation” through to “Skilled”, with the option to progress to “Expert” status.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

 

Along with your experience, you must hold…

 

  • NVQ level 3 Mechanical qualification
  • A full UK driving licence will be required for the role

You’ll be expected to know how to work with process control systems and have a working knowledge of industrial mechanical installation requirements and standards. In Severn Trent we use a number of different devices on the job so your experience working with various IT systems will be great.

 

You must have sound diagnostic and problem-solving skills. Basic instrumentation skills are desirable but not essential as there will be an opportunity to upskill and develop a second skill set.
